1) prevent/stop CUI (corrosion under insulation)

2) reinforce corrosion thinned pipes

3) stop or prevent leaks through the pipe or around nipples

4) as a field weld-joint coating

These epoxies are thickened and reinforced with Kevlar(tm) microfibers and are often used with fiberglass tape in a wrapping fashion. They can withstand pressures of over 2000 psi.

Repairing or strengthening leaking, pitted or thinned piping with an exterior wrap of fiberglass cloth and resin is a common practice. Basically, with the pressure in the pipe removed, the pipe is wrapped with multiple layers of resin soaked fabric, much like one would wrap a sprained ankle. The process is messy, but low tech and can be done successfully by anyone.

There are two basic wrap systems.

The first is a 'kit' consisting of a water-activated resin covering a roll of fiberglass kits. Progressive Epoxy Polymers sells such low priced kits in two sizes. Click here for more info -- example shown here:

The second approach is using a high performance, solvent free epoxy (which can be applied underwater if necessary) which is 'buttered ' on to 2, 3, or 4 inch wide fiberglass cloth (typically available in 50 yard rolls) and tightly wrapped around the pipe. Click Here for specific PDF formatted application directions.

Estimated materials needed:
10 inch dia pipe 4 inch wide fiberglass 10 ft section
3 wraps of fibeglass equals 260 ft of cloth and 2.5 gallons of epoxy

Progressive Epoxy Polymers sells both the fiberglass cloth (3 inch and 4 wide, others sizes by special order), and the epoxy resins. RESINS: wet/dry 700 or (cannot be shipped by air) our thinner Corro Coat FC 2100A (non hazmat to ship) the fast setting (or cold weather) Quick Fix 2300. (non hazmat to ship).
