| ESP 155™ |
PRODUCT PRO AND CON REVIEW |
| PRO | Easy and convenient to use. A favorite product for coating raw wood or old fiberglass. Easy to pigment |
| CON | Only available in 2 quart kits. Alkyld enamels may dry slowly when applied over ESP 155. Reports of Premium No Blush epoxy fisheyeing when applied over ESP |
ESP 155™ is a very thin, low viscosity, moisture tolerant, epoxy designed
for priming and sealing. Use on wood and fiberglass to improve adhesion of urethanes and other paints. Firm up
damaged wood. Unlike our competitor's penetrating epoxy, we pack 75% resin (vs. their 30%), enough to generally
seal and prime in one coat (instead of several) yet with enough solvent (25%) to penetrate deeply. Also used as
a concrete primer to reduce outgassing when top coating with solvent-free topcoats. A 1/2 gallon unit will probably
cover about - 300+ square feet of a fiberglass hull and about 100-125 square feet of porous wood. APPLY WITH BRUSH.
Another very importand application is as a concrete sealer under thick solvent free epoxy floor systems. On surfaces other than residential garages (where the cement is generally 'vibrated down' to remove air from the cement) i.e. barns, workshops, etc. air trapped in the cement can be released into the thick epoxy forming lots of air bubble/blisters/craters. Reduce or eliminate by sealing the cement first with a thinned epoxy sealer like ESP 155™ .
Generally epoxies used as penetrating waterproofers use lots of solvents and the lowest quality epoxy available.
ESP is an amazing exception, probably nothing else like it available. It uses a top of the line cycloaliphatic curing system as a starting point!
The other 'penetrating/sealing' epoxies are very vague about the epoxy
they use in their product - bottom of the line, el cheapo stuff I would imagine.
For an undercoat under a latex or enamel topcoat, I like our moisture cured urethane - aluthane, more than using a solvent thinned epoxy.
Alternative product: add solvent to our solvent free LOW V epoxy (in this section)
Now you can pigment your clear epoxy (to see better what you are doing). We have epoxy pigments - see section 8
½ gallon kit (two quart cans)- $46
cannot be sold in Southern California (San Diego area)
A little bit of our brown and/or red pigment (marine link / res. link) added to our clear epoxy sealer - ESP 155™ (marine link / res. link), traditional India Spar Varnish™ (marine link / res. link), or our 2 part LPU clear polyurethane - Acrylic Poly UV Plus™ (marine link / res. link), works like a high end stain on wood surfaces without the issues of compatibility. Tinting a first coat of a clear product (with white pigment for example) can mean fewer fewer topcoats of white paint. Also it is much easier to brush or roll on an even, uniform layer of coating when that coating is slightly pigmented instead of clear. It is very hard to see what you are doing when applying a clear coating.

Use ESP 155 to 'seal/prime/smooth'
patched and repaired surfaces.

Low V Epoxy:
| LOW V™ |
PRODUCT PRO AND CON REVIEW |
| PRO | Thin and watery, bonds to damp surfaces, lots of uses! |
| CON | Shows epoxy UV yellowing faster than other epoxies. |
For sealing and waterproofing -- see our page on penetrating epoxies
A very thin epoxy. Very clear - only a trace of amber.. Simple 2:1 mix. Recommended epoxy for sealing or as a penetrating epoxy when solvent is added. Clear, with just a trace of amber color. A very popular, general purpose, low viscosity, clear epoxy. Will bond to damp surfaces. Fast 'time to hard'. Mix with 10% xylene for an excellent penetrating epoxy. Also used as a primer on porous surfaces and under polyurethanes. Used for repairing rotted wood. Unlike our 'hard epoxies' (Basic No Blush, Premium No Blush, ) this epoxy has a bit of 'natural flex' when applied as a thin sealing coat.
Mix really well - with parts A and B so thin and clear it is very easy to mix poorly and have uneven mixing within the same batch. This will produce tacky sections that never get completely hard and tack free.
Note: We have seen this product fisheye on old wood surfaces that have been 'bleached' and then stained. The oils in the stain or 'teak oil' (perhaps something in the wood bleach, I don't know) seem to remain in the wood despite solvent washing, sanding etc. Old teak trim is a good example. We've seen Low V fisheye on old teak being refinished that seemed to be 'weathered down to just wood'. I think the fix would be (not tested) to 'seal' the wood from the epoxy, say with a coat of solvent thinned varnish which would not be as affected by residual oils.
This product is also used as a 'concrete primer' under industrial floor epoxies to improve adhesion and reduce
possible bubbles in the floor coatings caused by outgasing from the cement.

EMAIL (FEB 06): Hello:
I just bought some of your Low V epoxy and it is superior in every way to the system 3 products I (formerly) used,
their clear coat and mirror coat.
Less money, better adhesion, better flow, better release of trapped gas, clarity, speed of cure, and machineability.
It's like night and day, and their product is nothing to laugh at!
Great Product, I will buy *whatever* I need from you in the future.....
GREG
EMAIL (March 09):
Remember me? I promised you a report on the results of using Low-V as an undercoat/sealer in a difficult exterior application (western red cedar porch steps). See email appended below. Here's an excerpt:
So I bought a gallon of Low-V, and I have started using it to treat my front steps. I have been thinning the Low-V with about 25% Xylene to increase penetration. I have to use 2 coats of latex to eliminate the brush marks and bare areas (as you advised earlier), and after 2 coats the coverage looks excellent and it appears to have bonded well. I'll let you know the results in about a year if you are interested in how well it stands up to the weather......
I thought you might like to hear a status update. Well it's been over 8 months, which included summer, fall, and winter weather, and the Low-V treated steps look great. There is NO blistering or peeling. The latex topcoat paint is adhering quite well. It hasn't endured rainy/warm/humid spring weather yet, but from what I'm seeing so far I am very optimistic. -- Russ

For clearcoat sealing of epoxy/paint chip floors
Epoxy floors with decorative paint chips in them (see www.epoxyproducts.com/chips4u.html) can either have the chips sprinkled
into the pigmented epoxy, or more professionally, applied on and rolled into a clearcoat (solvent free epoxy or
high solvent polyurethane) that is applied over the pigmented, cured, base coat. Often another coat is then applied.
A final coat or two of a two part poly with UV blockers to prevent the epoxies from their natural yellowing (acrylic poly UV plus™). . However, these two part polys are high in solvents and cannot be sold in California. They also have strong fumes.
The distinquishing properties of this clear epoxy are: thin (low viscosity); clear (well, slighty milky); slow yellowing;

Important User Notes:
Mixing: even a slightly less then perfect mixing can ruin a table pour and Murphy's Law seems to always apply. First make sure parts A and B are clear (part A and/or by may have a slight yellow or amber tint, this will not be visible in your pour).
Get everything at the same temperature - epoxy and the all surfaces and keep it that way for a day or so after the pour. Avoid applying near windows etc. where sunlight will change the temperature. Temperature changes (warmer temps) may cause bubbles to form.
Next, mix a bit of A and B (2:1 mix ratio) and test on your surface. This is to give you experience with the product, test compatibility with your surface, bubbles coming out of the surface, etc. No one wants surprises with the main pour! Make sure your edges/corners don't leak! (you can seal with a bit of this test bit of epoxy - then re-test for leaks!).
Now, mix up batches no larger than 1.5 gallons at a time. Larger batches can be harder to mix well, are more likely to spill, etc. Mix in a separate, large, third container. Pouring into and out of this third container aids mixing. Using a large container will mean you can mix vigorously without concern of it spilling out over the top. Not mixing well vertically (mixing the top and bottom layers) is a disappointment waiting to happen!
Don't try to get the last few drops of epoxy out of your mixing container. The liquid sticking to the sides and corners/edges of the container never get completely mixed. Pour your mixture out of the mixing container but don't keep it draining out for more than 10 seconds or so. Poorly mixed epoxy will always stay tacky or wet, either in certain areas or all over.
Finally, the epoxy will feel dry and firm overnight but will continue hardening for a week or so. Don't place papers or objects on the epoxy for at least several days or they will stick or leave a dent.
MORE INFO: epoxies will yellow in sunlight - if this is an issue topcoat with our 2 part Acrylic Poly Plus with
UV protectors.

Basic No-Blush™ Epoxy:
PRODUCT PRO AND CON REVIEW
BASIC NO BLUSH™
PRO
Probably the best epoxy bargain available anyplace in terms of price and performance.
Our reason for being in business.
CON
Turns white if it gets wet within about 18 hours after application (early cure)
The least expensive general purpose industrial/marine type epoxy
available - and its even non-blushing! OUR BEST SELLING
PRODUCT BY FAR! PEOPLE BUY IT, TRY IT, AND COME BACK FOR MORE! - this product has its own web page
We recently looked at the marine epoxy market (plain, unpigmented resin systems) and
were surprised at the cost of these general purpose repair and building resins. Besides being expensive, most used
inferior blushing curing agents. Working with our formulator/chemist we developed Basic No-Blush™ to be the least
expensive marine epoxy in North America for blushing or non-blushing epoxies.
We've upgraded this product, improving it based upon feedback from our users (a novel, unheard of idea in the epoxy business). The new version is about $1.25 more gallon and well worth the cost. Performance is much improved - we'll stack this epoxy against anyone else's product.
No Blush™ is technically classified as an epoxy Adduct, (that's a good thing!) just like our nuclear approved, high end performance, potable water approved, NSP 120 epoxy coating. Epoxy adducts, in general terms, combines a tiny bit of resin in with the curing agent, sort of seeding the epoxy reaction and enhancing performance. See our Chemistry of Epoxies page.
This epoxy has a fast 'time to sand' (i.e. "Hard Set" very rigid, provides max strength and abrasion resistance ). Users report sanding the next day after application. Many epoxies take several days to become hard enough to sand (unless they are very brittle). No Blush has both quick sand time and not nearly the brittleness of many other marine epoxies. It also brushes out really nicely as a clear coat on a flat surface.
It will turn white if it gets wet during initial cure - say 0-18 hours after application. This white surface cannot be removed.
Mix with sand to form a low cost epoxy patching product (Click Here for More Info).
Our Basic with standard cure is often used to reseal epoxy/pebble stone decks (coverage 200-250 square feet per 1.5 gal kit. Also see our special thick roller for this application - Section i - misc.)
Now available in three versions (standard, 'cold weather-winter'
(fast), and 'hot weather-summer (slow)) - same low price for each! The summer cure has double the potlife of the
regular cure and is recommended for temps over 80 degrees F.
11/24/08 AUTHOR'S NOTE: I'm doing epoxy/fiberglass cloth boat building here in NH using the Basic No Blush with the Winter (fast) curing agent. The epoxy is stored in my basement at 50 degrees. The boat building is happening in my garage at temps in the mid 30s. The epoxy is hard the next day.
NOTE: THIS PRODUCT HAS A TENDENCY FOR THE PART A RESIN TO 'CRYSTALIZE'
The 1.5 gal units of Basic now come in one gallon plastic jugs.
We ofter pumps for these jugs. They are $11.50 a pair and one stroke of the pump dispenses about 1 oz. of product.
In our online, 3rd party storefront, you'll find the pumps listed with the Basic No Blush on the 'resins page'.
Note: we don't really like the 'pump' approach to epoxies, but a majority of boatbuilders want the pumps and we've learned it is all about providing the customers with what they want and need and not about pushing my personal view on to the marketplace. I find their quality lacking, but we only get 1 or 2 complaints per 100 or so pumps we sell and we've not be able to find better alternatives to what we offer. So, pump away!
POTLIFE

Excellent web site!!! I have started testing your "Basic No Blush Epoxy". Wow! Good stuff and affordable
too. I intentionally incorrectly mixed your product to test its sensitivity to mix ratio variations. Very, very
forgiving. The pot life is very consistent even with some variation in ratio and set up is consistent as well.
It also does not seem to flash as easily as other epoxies I have worked with. I got by working in the 16 oz. mixing
cups without having to pour to a wider flat bottomed container. I usually wait till an epoxy starts to flash or
just slightly heats up in the cup before I pour it into an ice cream bucket. That is of course not a summer time
practice but my shop can get down to 60 F. in the winter. But your product did not seem to heat a lot. I was even
a little nervous about it setting up but it cured like a champ! I am very happy with your Basic No Blush and I'll
be back for more.
Sincerely yours -- J.A.

FYI..... I have used your epoxy on alot of various applications, from thinning it for deeper penetration/sealing, to thickening for bonding multiple wood components and the stuff is great. All exterior wood gets one coat of thinned epoxy, then 2 coats full strenght. then i have applied 10 coats of poly spar varnish. I have had a piece of hon. mahogany in a bucket of water for 3 months and the finish is still perfect and completly sealed. You guys are helping me restore a 35 yr. old wooden cutter, Thanks again.

I purchased a basic no blush sampler back in March to try and make some aquarium decorations.
I used PVC pipe, epoxy coated aquarium rocks and your epoxy with a fair amount of thickener. I used your advice
and waited a week before using to let the epoxy cure completely and put it in the aquarium. The pictures show the
results. The blue one has been in the aquarium since the middle of May (the picture is from a week ago) and the
pink one is for my daughter. Basic No Blush™ epoxy - in space! It is not just about boats or pebble decks - Basic No Blush epoxy is being used by amateur rocket builder

I take good care of my tanks, testing and maintaining the water quality and, making sure the fish are healthy.
The blue one is in a 90 gallon with almost 30 fish and 2 frogs and I haven’t experienced a single problem.
I could probably use any epoxy but your customer service was exceptional. Understanding that epoxy is non toxic
