PRODUCT PRO AND CON REVIEW |
| PRO | Awesome coating for metal and wood, great protection, looks great. Last of the great 'metallic coatings'. Users become true believers! |
| CON | Open containers don't store well. Hard to remove from your skin if you get it on you. Hard to remove lid from can if you get some in the lid lip. |
Aluminum Filled Urethane Coating (classification: metallic coating)

Bridge painted with epoxy then topcoated with this product for 'metal look'
A moisture cured urethane, aluminum flake filled, that non-epoxy was specifically formulated as a metallic over
less-than perfectly prepared surfaces. Works in temps. down to 40 F. However, this coating often ends up as an
aluminum colored topcoat. We're impressed with the ‘fresh galvanized' look it gives back to boat trailers. Also
makes aluminum masts and booms look new. Gives engines and other mechanical equipment that dealer fresh look (or
primed and ready to repaint status). On smooth surfaces it has a 'flat' galvanized look. On rough surfaces it has
a shiny silvery look. Unique penetrating urethane chemistry seals and covers rust, keeps it from ‘rusting back
through.' We know this is a great product - we can't get it off your hands even after days of normal washing and
wear. The real aluminum flakes can handle temperatures of several hundred degrees (and resists burning better than
regular paint). Used industrially on large metal tanks, bridges, and piping with or without topcoating. A truly
unique primer AND/OR attractive metallic topcoat. Because of their
amazing bonding, commercial painting contractors use moisture cured urethanes on surfaces that they cannot prep
as well as they would like to. You should too! One quart units cover
up to 100 square feet (about 75 square feet on rough surfaces and 100 square feet on smooth surfaces).
Note: latex paints don't go over aluthane nicely (like latex over oil based paints). Sovlent based coatings (urethanes, enamels etc.) do cover aluthane nicely.
Can also be used as a thin, hard/durable (harder than epoxy)
1 part cement floor coating. See
our b_floor.html catalog page.
TESTING RESULTS: I coated an Armstong brand commercial floor tile
(12 inch by 12 inch), as well as a piece of plywood, with one coat of Aluthane and submerged it in a freshwater
pond for 5 months. Both samples were perfectly intact (no peeling, bistering, softening, etc. at the end on the
test. While urethanes are generally not considered suitable for immersion applications, this product appears to
work fine underwater We cannot officially warranty it for immersion, but I personally now feel comfortable enough
that I would use it on a dinghy boat bottom, boat mooring, submerged pump, etc.
More about our Aluthane product (5/05): from personal experience I can say that it makes a great primer (primer page), bonding solidly to surfaces that other coatings will not. I personally like it on wood (really soaks in!) such as porches etc. It can be painted over with latex or enamel without problem (or left alone). What's really nice is that when sanded lightly it gets darker in color, so when used as a primer/sealer, a bit of sanding will show high (dark) spots and low (lighter) spots as you sand smooth the surface.
If you're looking for a coating you can just sort of slap on without a lot of surface prep and have it last a long time (even underwater) - use our Aluthane™.

Capt. Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure sealer:
Tiny little hairline cracks in fiberglass boats, fancy woodwork, china cups, in and around bolted down fittings, etc. can be a real problem. These cracks are much too small for fixing with glues or things like silicon sealers. Even things like paint and epoxy paints will just bridge over these hairline cracks. When the trapped air and/or moisture in the cracks expands the crack will migrate up through the paint or epoxy paint - ruining that perfect restoration job.
About 10 years ago I discovered Capt. Tolley's Creaping Crack Cure. I used in on the hairline cracks in the fiberglass deck of my 30 year old sailboat. It was amazing. The product looks like watered-down Elmer's Glue. Put a tiny drop near a hairline crack and capillary action immediately sucks the product into the crack, sealing the crack from the INSIDE, not by simply covering it over. It really works! The cracks don't re-appear through your paint or epoxy topcoat. It is a copolymer that is thinner than water so it fills the cracks via capillary action that even water cannot penetrate.
I also found that a tiny drop of it around a nut/bolt combination locks the nut into place keeping it from vibrating off the my lawn mower, trailer hitch, etc.
I added this product to our catalog because I liked the product personally and thought it would bring a few more folks to our website. Obviously with its low price it's not a big money maker for us, especially since we sell it for a bit less than probably everyone else. I've been shocked at how much we sell! Usually a few bottles of each just about everyday. I never would have thought it would be such a consistant and good seller, I just don't know.

Note: the 2 oz bottle has a better nozzle than the larger 8 oz bottle, so many people use the 8 oz as a refill for the 2 oz bottle.

LOW COST 2-part Polyurethane Paint
A two part acrylic polyurethane (LPU) clear coat which was especially formulated with max amount of UV blockers
and absorbers to keep epoxy floors from UV related yellowing. Available in clear gloss or clear satin. Coverage
is about 300 square feet per gallon. Apply in thin coats with plenty of 'dry' time between coats. Handles moisture
well.
Note that 2 part urethanes can be tricky/difficult to brush apply. They set up quickly on applied surfaces and can leave brush marks, even when special 'reducers' are used. If using a brush, have our 'slow' SU 93 reducer (see below) on hand, use a quality brush, and test your application first, in case you're not happy with the brushed on result (such as on boat hulls, poured on epoxy table tops, etc.). Always apply in very thin layers/coats.
If applied on a flat surface, in a dusty setting, like many basements, you may see what looks like tiny tiny bubbles forming on the surface 10-60 seconds after application. These specs are from the dust in the air.
CANNOT BE SOLD IN CALIFORNIA
This product compares directly to Awlcraft 2000™ clear coat but is sells for 30% of the Awlcraft price (70% discount!). We are fairly certain our product has much more UV protection (UV blockers and UV absorbers) than Awlcraft 2000 clear. AWLGRIP WEB SITE.

Paul,
I've got my first coat of the 2 part poly on....... Thank you - JR
BTW... it went on very well. Reminds me of the Interthane Plus I used
years ago.
Also used on wood floors!

This is the traditonal, amber colored, solvent based varnish most of us grew up with. Due to VOC restrictions it is getting harder and harder to find. I, and many others, find the modern replacements less than satisfactory in turns of look, feel and performance. Varnish is often applied over epoxy built kayaks to protect the epoxy from UV damage while still showing the natural wood finish. We can offer this product only because of the quart unit exemption to the VOC regulations. This exemption is no longer in place in California.
