Many professional and semi professional boat builders (and other
folks) saturate fiberglass cloth with epoxy resin in a vacuum environment. This is known as VACUUM RESIN INFUSION.
Third party site and case study: www.fram.nl
Generally the resin used in such a system is thinner than normal marine resin. This aids it in moving through the
tubing used in this method. Also the resin tends to have a longer potlife because of the longer time needed to
set up the system and because of the larger volumes of resin in each mixed batch.
Progressive Epoxy Polymers, Inc. has introduced a 'slow' curing agent to our clear, watery, thin epoxy which we call LOW V™ Epoxy. The slow curing agent makes this a good product for general use in hot weather (epoxies 'set up' faster in hot conditions) or for vacuum infusion. We call it VIR 100™.
LOW V™ is available with its 'normal' curing agent in 48 oz, 1.5 gallon, and 15 gallon units (2:1 mix by volume).
The Slow/Infusion version (VIR 100™) is available only in 48 oz test units and special order 15 gallon units (or
any gallon amount over 15 gallons).
