First things first. New to epoxies? Need to learn the basics of epoxy resins? Here are four articles to get you up to speed.

1) 25POINTS.HTML, covers 25 key points about epoxies

2) EPOXYPAINT101 continues the lessons regarding epoxy basics.

3) FAIL4U.HTML explains why coatings can fail

4) EVAL4U.HTML tells you how to evaluate your epoxy and your epoxy vendor

You will find these links on our "Link Page" in the INFO SECTION

AMINE BLUSH is a waxy film (sometimes visible/sometimes not) that can form on epoxy resins as they cure. It needs to be removed or it could affect the adhesion of anything applied over the epoxy. Just about all vendors offer a NO BLUSH or NON BLUSHING marine epoxy, which we recommend. However non blushing epoxies will cost a bit more. When comparing epoxies, be sure to compare 2 blushing or 2 non blushing "Professional Grade / Commercial Grade / Industrial Grade" epoxy resin. Go to the INFO SECTION of our Link Page and click on BLUSH4U.HTML.

EPOXY RESIN PRICES. We all know the joke. Add the word Marine to the product and you can sell it for two or three times its price. Unfortunately it is all too true. Few people know how to compare one marine epoxy with another (see next article) so price is often based on the contrived marketing image of the resin and little else. About the only thing you can tell from price is that the "super cheap" stuff is often just the raw resins and curing agents decanted directly from giant drums purchased from the handful of giant chemical companies that make these chemicals. Epoxy vendors like Progressive Epoxy Polymers (epoxyproducts.com), System Three, etc. start with these drums of chemicals but then formulate - modify - adjust these raw materials into products that have the characteristics they want. One note of warning, one of those characteristics might be maximum profit.... Go to the INFO SECTION of our Link Page and click on MPRICES.HTML. COMPARING COMMERCIAL MARINE EPOXIES. Professional and DIY folks all need to compare one brand of epoxy from another, especially if price isn't a good indicator of quality or performance. There are two articles that address epoxy product evaluation. Learn what to look for in your laminating epoxy resin / repair epoxy etc. Go to the INFO SECTION of our Link Page and click on MEPOXIES.HTML and also EVAL4U.HTML.

BASIC NO BLUSH (tm) COMMERCIAL GRADE MARINE EPOXY. Basic No Blush marine epoxy is a professional grade marine resin used for fiberglass boat repair, wooden boat repair, boat building, and fiberglass laminating. It can be thickened into a paste or gel, or thinned and used as a sealer. As the name implies, it is a non blushing marine epoxy. Go to the PRODUCT SECTION of our Link Page and click on "Basic No Blush" link (NOBLUSH.HTML).

EPOXY MIX RATIO INFORMATION. Epoxy resin systems are two part epoxy products. There is a Part A that is mixed with a Part B. Sometimes it is a 1 to 1 mix, or a 2 to 1 mix or perhaps some strange 4.7 to 1 mix ratio. Does the epoxy mixing ratio tell you anything useful? Find out here. Go to the INFO SECTION of our Link Page and click on MIXRATIO.HTML.

MORE ON PROFESSIONAL GRADE BASIC NO BLUSH (tm) AND OTHER MARINE EPOXIES (PREMIUM NO BLUSH - tm ) AND OTHER CLEAR EPOXY PRODUCTS. Another article on boar building resin systems with examples. Mostly about Basic No Blush epoxy, but other boat epoxy products as well. Go to the INFO SECTION of our Link Page and click on MARINEEPOXY.HTML.

PROFESSIONAL BOAT BUILDER MAGAZINE REVIEWS. This Boat Building magazine reviewed both BASIC NO BLUSH (tm) and PREMIUM NO BLUSH (tm) in Jan. of 2004. Other products too (some no longer available).

NON SLIP - ANTI SLIP PAINT / ADDITIVES. Lots and lots of options here! Grits come in different sizes and have different textures depending upon how thick the coating it is being used with. Also, different kinds of grits, as well as different methods of grit application resulting in different textures. How much grit do you want, 10% coverage or 100% coverage? Also at least two coatings with grit already in them. You could spend an entire winter developing the 'grit' system for your project. Two articles address this topic. Go to the INFO SECTION of our Link Page and click on GRIT.HTML and NONSLIP.HTML links.

MORE ON NON SLIP DECKS. Mix your grit with a semi-flexible epoxy paint and apply to your decks. Description and case study in these to articles. Go to the INFO SECTION of our Link Page and click on the FLEXDECK.HTML and the CS_FLEXDECK.HTML links.

EPOXY PRIMER - EPOXY SEALER - PENETRATING EPOXY - EPOXY WATERPROOFING. Lots and lots of 'talk' about penetrating epoxies, epoxy primers, solvent thinning epoxy, etc. The reality is less impressive than the marketing hype. Does epoxy make a good primer? Five articles you should read covering these murky topics. The rot.html article is more a how to for rotten window sill repair. Go to the INFO SECTION (rot subsection) of our Link Page and click on the following PENETRATING4U.HTML, SOLVENTS.HTML, PRIMER.HTML, ROT.HTML, WOODSEAL.HTML links.

THICK EPOXY - EPOXY PASTE - EPOXY PUTTY. Lots and lots of repairs involve using thick epoxy resin. You can thicken epoxy yourself, or purchase pre-thickened epoxy. Then go to the PRODUCT SECTION of our Link Page and click on the SILICA.HTML link.

Building the small stitch and glue boat

We have links to three different photo albums/how to sites that will show - and in one case guide you - with the construction of stitch and glue small boats. 1) is the construction of two small rowboats; 2) is the construction of a kayak, called Toto, and 3) takes you the Jem Watercraft web site. They sell small boat plans and have a How To tutorial showing the stitch and glue method as they actually build a small boat. This link currently active (12/09). You will find these links on our "Link Page" in the boating subsection of the INFO SECTION.

Boat Related Questions?

Visit our HELP page first, then EMAIL US or post your questions on the WOODENBOAT Forum. This forum is the largest, most active boat forum on the Internet. You will get lots of useful replies.

We are the only professional epoxy people/vendor that regularly monitors the forum and replies to epoxy resin questions through the forum's private non-posted email system. Why don't the other marine epoxy vendors watch with this forum on their free time? We have no idea why they don't.
