ALUTHANE™

PRODUCT PRO AND CON REVIEW

PRO Awesome coating for metal and wood, great protection, looks great. Last of the great 'metallic coatings'. Users become true believers!
CON Open containers don't store well. Hard to remove from your skin if you get it on you. Hard to remove lid from can if you get some in the lid lip.

A moisture cured urethane (MCU) , aluminum flake filled,  non-epoxy was specifically formulated as a metalic coating over less-than perfectly prepared surfaces. Dries in temperatures down to 40 F. However, this coating often ends up as an aluminum colored topcoat. We're impressed with the ‘fresh galvanized' look it gives back to boat trailers. Also makes aluminum masts and booms look new. Gives engines and other mechanical equipment that dealer fresh look (or primed and ready to repaint status). On smooth surfaces it has a 'flat' galvanized look. On rough surfaces it has a shiny silvery look. Unique penetrating urethane chemistry seals and covers rust, keeps it from ‘rusting back through.' We know this is a great product - we can't get it off your hands even after days of normal washing and wear. The real aluminum flakes can handle temperatures of several hundred degrees (and resists burning better than regular paint). Used industrially on large metal tanks, bridges, and piping with or without topcoating. A truly unique primer AND/OR attractive metallic topcoat. Because of their amazing bonding, commercial painting contractors use moisture cured urethanes on surfaces that they cannot prep as well as they would like to. You should too! One quart units cover up to 100 square feet (about 75 square feet on rough surfaces and 100 square feet on smooth surfaces).

This product now has its own information page (which includes user comments - including adding thickeners for an 'off label' thick build primer ) - CLICK HERE (aluthane aluminum paint)

Common applications: aluminum boats, weathered rusting galvanized surfaces, primer on wood or metal, anti rust coating, heat reflecting coating

Hi Paul,

I was working on the boat today and couldn't help but notice how sharp my aluminum hardtop (still) looks after a very harsh summer of hard work on the salty ocean and a long New England winter exposed to the elements.

I remember the day I finished welding my hardtop and sat baffled as to how to finish it. You see, the hardtop frame was comprised of a half cut-up Mako tower (anodized aluminum) and scrap 6061 aluminum, all TIG welded together. With little to no prep, aside from a light sanding and a wash with alcohol, I was able to brush on (stippling) two coats of Aluthane in a day and have the boat launched a week later. Since then, the frame has seen rope chaffing, scrapes, climbing crew with abrasive sandy shoes, and harsh sun and seawater. The finish has never worn through and shows no signs of damage.

It has held up marvelously. So well in fact, I go out of my way to find things to paint with Aluthane. So far, I've painted my engines heat exchanger, primer my manifolds and risers, painted parts of my galvanized trailer including the wheels, and various mixed metal hardware on my boat.

I've recommended this product to others looking for a tough coating that can take a beating. A little goes a long way with Aluthane and it is almost funny how easily it goes on, rolled or brushed. One caveat, brushing will show brush marks so I usually stipple the surface with a brush with its bristles cut way back (or roll it on). Continuous mixing is key, too. It isn't glossy which is nice in some cases.

2) ACRYLIC POLY UV PLUS (LPU Coating)

** EMAIL //// ph 603.435.7199 EST ////  BUY ONLINE (two different online stores) /// RETURN TO MARINE CATALOG HOMEPAGE **

VOC 249 g/l --- Shipped UPS ground only. Sold in the lower 47 states. Not for sale in California

A two part acrylic polyurethane (LPU) clear coat which was especially formulated with max amount of UV blockers and absorbers to keep epoxy floors from UV related yellowing. Available in clear gloss. Coverage is about 300 square feet per gallon. Apply in thin coats with plenty of 'dry' time between coats. Handles moisture well.

Note that 2 part urethanes can be tricky/difficult to brush apply (google - "roll and tip"). They set up quickly on applied surfaces and can leave brush marks, even when special 'reducers' are used. If using a brush, have our 'slow' SU 93 reducer (see below) on hand, use a quality brush, and test your application first, in case you're not happy with the brushed on result (such as on boat hulls, poured on epoxy table tops, etc.). Always apply in very thin layers/coats.

cannot be sold in California

This product compares directly to Awlcraft 2000™ clear coat but is sells for 30% of the Awlcraft price (70% discount!). We are fairly certain our product has much more UV protection (UV blockers and UV absorbers) than Awlcraft 2000 clear..

Stopping UV damage and UV yellowing  ----------------    Josie Lewis (6/2010) wrote:

Hi Paul: I recently purchased some clear epoxy  and Acrylic Poly UV Plus from your company. I have access to a UV chamber which simulates high altitude direct UV exposure. I thought you might be interested in my findings. I used a Masonite panel painted white and then coated with the epoxy. On half of the epoxy coated panel, I brushed on one coat of UV Poly and put it in the chamber for 644 hours at 50 C (the heat accelerates the exposure). Attached is a picture of the results. The masonite cracked a bit and separated due to a bit of wetness in the wood (unrelated to the resin). The epoxy  ambered dramatically within about 50 hours. After 644 hours, the UV Poly showed a slight bit of ambering from the original control but it is marginal at worst. The technician who ran the test said if it isn't yellow at 644 hours it is basically indestructible. I also tested several other 2-part resin products with the UV Poly and had the same result. You have a great product. I now feel secure knowing that my resin art, protected with the Poly UV Plus, will be archival and protected for long years. I will be ordering more soon!

Best, Josie (6/2010) Order Acrylic Poly UV plus - (see more about UV --- UV issues)  cannot be sold in Calif. - and all our other products at our King Cart Storefront. Acrylic poly UV Plus is in the non-epoxy section.

Save over 50% (hundreds of dollars!) On 2-Part Marine Topsides Paint

Two part polyurethane paints are the best of user applied coatings. Automobiles and fine yachts use them We offer two outstanding products. One is a snowy white yacht coating (LPU Marine) and the other is a Clear with massive UV protection (something not often found in even the most expensive two-part polys - auto clear coat being the exception). More on 2 part polys - CLICK HERE

We checked the prices for similar Awgrip brand polys at discount marine supply store WEST MARINE (Feb 2019). Their polyester polyurethane white sells for $280 per gallon. (that’s $420 for 1.5 gallons - vs. $199 for our 1.5 gal package). Use our LPU Marine polyester poly and save 53%.

Our clear acrylic poly (Acrylic Poly UV Plus) vs. their clear Awlcraft 2000 clear acrylic poly (which doesn’t have the UV blockers and absorbers that our product does - a really valuable addition) - sells for $149 per gallon vs. their price of $270 per gallon.

Let's talk! - 503-435-7199

(Special Notes):

Strong solvent odor - not for sale in California - 2 part polys are not especially user friendly

A little bit of our brown and/or red pigment (marine link / res. link) added to our clear epoxy sealer - ESP 155™ (marine link / res. link), traditional India Spar Varnish™ (marine link / res. link), or our 2 part LPU clear polyurethane - Acrylic Poly UV Plus™ (marine link / res. link), works like a high end stain on wood surfaces without the issues of compatibility. Tinting a first coat of a clear product (with white pigment for example) can mean fewer fewer topcoats of white paint. Also it is much easier to brush or roll on an even, uniform layer of coating when that coating is slightly pigmented instead of clear. It is very hard to see what you are doing when applying a clear coating.

Hi, I train spray painters in Queensland Australia the technical aspects of Polyurethane paint. However some people just can’t get the difference of the two major types. Polyester vs Acrylic. I would like to use your excellent discussion paper in my training as an unbiased view and give credit to author Paul Oman and your company. https://epoxyproducts.com/lpu.html

Paul,
I've got my first coat of the 2 part poly on....... Thank you - JR

BTW... it went on very well. Reminds me of the Interthane Plus I used years ago.

Jack wrote:  "HEY PAUL --  when i am spraying your clear, i set my pressure at 35-40 lbs. I will spray a coat and let it tack of to the touch, then spray another.. on all my parts except the fuselage, the next day i would sand it with #400 wet paper then put 2 more coats.. this makes a very good gloss."

VOC 450 g/l --- Shipped UPS ground only. Sold in the lower 47 states. Not for sale in California

This is the traditional, amber colored, solvent based varnish most of us grew up with. Due to VOC restrictions it is getting harder and harder to find. I, and many others, find the modern replacements less than satisfactory in turns of look, feel and performance. Varnish is often applied over epoxy built kayaks to protect the epoxy from UV damage while still showing the natural wood finish. We can offer this product only because of the quart unit exemption to the VOC regulations. This exemption is no longer in place in California.

INDIA SPAR VARNISH™

PRODUCT PRO AND CON REVIEW

PRO High end 2 part LPU poly at less than 50% of the price of the competition
CON Only available in gloss white. Not for sale in Calif.

Two part urethanes are considered the most durable of brush/roll/spray on coatings and Polyester Polyurethanes are considered the most durable of the two part urethanes. They are known for long lasting gloss and color stability.

Two part polys really like/need a fresh (i.e. primed) surface to bond to. Epoxy primers (solvent thinned epoxies) are very common but 1 part solvent based primers are also used. There is no 'exclusive' primer, pretty much any epoxy, for example, will work.

Packaging is 1.5 gal units (1 gallon of the Part A and half gallon of the Part B). The product is approximately 60% solids (60% VOC).

Two part poly paints are not like 'regular' paints to apply. Even with added solvents (called reducers) they get 'tacky' immediately upon application to the surface. Search the net for 'Roll and Tip' as a method often used for better application. Best method is by spray.

NOTE: WE'RE MOSTLY AN EPOXY COMPANY, SO OUR SKILL LEVEL, SUPPORT AND RELATED PRODUCTS FOR THESE 2 PART POLYS IS 'WEAK' - OUR INCENTIVE IS THE LOW PRICE WE HAVE FOR THESE PRODUCTS (NOT REALLY LOWER THAN OUR OTHER PRODUCTS - JUST NOT THE SHOCKING HIGH PRICE EVERYONE ELSE CHARGES FOR THESE POLYS). WE HAVE BEEN SUGGESTING YOU FOLLOW THE ADVISE/RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE BIG POLY COMPANIES LIKE AWLGRIP BUT THEN SUBSTITUTE THEIR POLY WITH OURS.

Note that 2 part urethanes can be tricky/difficult to brush apply.

LPU coatings REALLY NEED to go on thin (multi thin coats!) - many folks sand between all or some of the coats. The coats are very thin so here is a link to a site that sells 'sandpaper' in the 400 - 12,000 super/super fine range (thanks for this info from one of our customers!) https://www.micro-surface.com/
