Pour On (drip over the edge) Epoxy for Table - Bar Tops

(see other options above)

A Review of low viscosity clear epoxies

Common applications for these kinds of epoxies  - floor coatings, table and bar tops, craft projects, sealing and water proofing. Pour on, roll on, or brush on.

INTRODUCTION/PRODUCT TESTING

During the spring of 2015 I tested/evaluated three different clear epoxies. Two are marketed as ‘pour on’ table top coatings (pour on and let it run over the edges). The third product was/is an industrial grade clear epoxy offered by one of my epoxy manufacturers.

Product A - a 1:1 mix table top epoxy I purchased online at Amazon in a 16 oz kit.

Product B - another 1:1 mix table top epoxy. I purchased this one from the very slick internet web site (too slick for a resin company - obviously a marketing company is in charge). I purchased a one gallon kit.

Product C - a 3:1 mix epoxy from one of my existing commercial epoxy manufacturers. I now sell it as "Epoxy Clear Top Resin." Note that the Part A is not crystal clear but a bit amber/honey (unlike the other products). However, it looks very clear when only 1/8  or 1/4 inch thick.

IMPORTANT EPOXY ISSUES YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

YELLOWING

1) all epoxies will yellow in UV sunlight. All three of these epoxies have very low yellowing compared to epoxies in general. This is an important characteristic for ‘pour on’ epoxies. But even with low yellowing, poured epoxies (or any epoxy) they should not be outdoors in sunlight 24/7. Use OPTION 4 above is your application is an outside table or bar.

Product C has a bit of amber in the Part A already, but still looks clear in smaller thickneses..

BUBBLES

2) Bubbles in the epoxy can be a problem. Some bubbles come from within the surface being covered with the epoxy. Other bubbles come from the epoxy itself due to the mixing of the two parts of the epoxy and the formulation chemistry of that particular epoxy. Most pour on epoxy web sites show how to use a torch or heat gun to ‘pop’ most of the bubble so I will not repeat that information here. That said, the heat gun or torch should be directed parallel to the surface of the epoxy, heating the air and not the epoxy.

More perplexing is the almost needle point tiny bubbles found embedded in Products A and B. They are almost invisible, but give a bit of a fuzzy look to objects in the epoxy. They are really bad in Product B *which had the least amount of yellowing),, much less in Product A and not found at all in Product C.

VISCOSITY

3) All three of these products have nearly identical viscosities, Rather thin and watery. Thicker epoxies generally have serious bubble issues - sort of the milk shake vs. a glass of water.

All claim you can pour 1/8 inch thick layers which can then drip over the edges of your project. In my tests all three epoxies actually poured out at less than 1/8 inch. Products A and B all suggest coverage to be about 16 square feet per gallon. It they actually were 1/8 inch thick coverage would only be 12 square feet per gallon.

Brushing on these epoxies, instead of pouring them one about doubles there coverage (meaning brushing results in a finish about half as thick as when just poured on and allowed to flow naturally).

CURE TIME/HARDNESS

4) After you mix the two part epoxy you have something like 10 - 25 minutes to apply/pour. The epoxy will become dry to the touch overnight (if it doesn’t or if you have tacky spots, you didn’t mix correctly or well enough).

I had real DEAL BREAKING issues with the hardening of Epoxy A and Epoxy B. You test hardness by pouring some epoxy onto a piece of wax paper. Let the epoxy cure (dry) for 2 days or so, then peel the epoxy from the wax paper. By day 2- 3 the epoxy should be quite hard - breaking in two when you attempt to bend it (that is how epoxies work!).

Epoxy A and Epoxy B stayed soft and rubbery for days and days (placed on top of my stove's pilot light). I could roll them into a tube. After a few days of this, I gave up and tossed the samples in the trash.  You certainly would not not to use these soft epoxies on your floor and craft project.

EPOXY C got hard within the expected timeframe. Note that one of the EPOXY A/B vendors states not to use the epoxy in temperatures below 75 degrees (epoxies cure faster when temperatures are higher, but they should be fine at temps in the low 50s. So they must know they have a problem with curing).

It would seem that the selection of resins and hardening agents for very clear epoxies is limited and can result in formulations that have real 'crosslinking/curing' issues.

 EPOXY PRICING

5) All three products are in the $70 - $80 a gallon price. This is the win-win price. It provides a suitable profit for the vendor without being a rip-off. Competition between the different vendors keeps the price as low as the vendors can offer while still staying in business. Yet, I have seen on the Internet other companies selling ‘bar top’ epoxy for about half the price. THIS IS A RED FLAG. It is too good to be true. No company can offer a decent bar top epoxy at those prices and stay in business.

CRAZY COMPETITOR STATEMENTS

The instructions that come with Epoxy A and Epoxy B included some zingers that made it clear these products are not sold by coating professionals. One insisted you could not use the epoxy unless temperatures were above a rather warm temperature. NOT TRUE - that is not how epoxies work (see above issues regarding epoxy curing).

The other product insisted it made a difference if you mixed Part A into Part B or if you mixed Part B into Part A. NOT TRUE - that is not how epoxies work.

CONCLUSIONS

"  Epoxy C " -  Epoxy Clear Top is the best product for your pour on table or bar top project, as well as for your "Penny Floor", or epoxy / colored chip garage floor top coat. Coverage (pour on) about 12 sf per 1 gal kit.
